Fathers and Sons:

   A Tip of the Hat
We remember the men, and the families, who raised us...

THE EDITORS:

Jim DeVoe and Scott Stratford, Editors

Jim DeVoe deciphered and organized his father Niles' memoir notes, titled "Lucky Me" -- but not until after Niles had passed away. Inspired by those initial words, Jim wrote what he called a "micro-memoir" interweaving his father's life story and his own. He soon realized that many of his friends, Baby Boomers all, might welcome the opportunity to capture and share their own father-son relationships in the postwar era. He recruited Scott Stratford, a colleague from their years in educational publishing, and the two of them cajoled, encouraged, and mentored a group of what eventually became twenty fellow contributors. These twenty-two stories, each with distinctive memories and varied experiences, weave a compelling mosaic of an era whose prosperity and promise now seem very distant--particularly to succeeding generations.

It was an era unlike any before it; in many ways it is very distant now.

From the Introduction:
"We, the sons, have undertaken this journey of reminiscence to illuminate and perhaps encapsulate what our fathers meant to us. We invite you, our readers, to join us on this voyage of rediscovery. Perhaps you will also find the inspiration to explore the warmth, the conflicts, and the legacies that your fathers--and your families--have meant to you."
